Turning Seasons

Aspen Trees - San Juan Mountains - Colorado

An early October snowstorm adds subtle drama to an already beautiful scene. These aspens, which grow beneath the towering peaks of the San Juan mountains immediately caught my eye. Typically, in autumn,  aspens  turn a deep shade of yellow or gold. Every now and again though, you will find aspens in many different shades of greens, yellows, oranges and even deep reds. Fall snowstorms are not at all uncommon, and while the contrasts of white snow on the brilliant autumn foliage are a photographers dream, it is also a double edged sword. Any amount of snow will typically speed up the leaf decay process, resulting in a shortened leaf season.
