Summers in the Rockies, although extremely short, are a time of plenty for the many animals that call these mountains home. The elk head up to the alpine tundra where they spend the few short weeks grazing and bulking up for the fall rut. In just a matter of weeks this elk will be completely transformed. His antlers will no longer be velvet. They will grow larger still, sharpened into weapons. Their bodies will be lean and muscular. The valleys will echo with the beautifully haunting sounds of bugling elk. The lazy days of summer will be a distant memory, but for now, life is good for this wandering bull.
